The following article documents the severe amount of terrorist attacks attributed to Islamist terrorists which have occurred throughout 2017. Some cases have been excluded due to a less clear nexus to Islamic terrorism. January 6, 2017: Florida Airport Shooting Attack
According to reports, an Islamist gunman opened fire inside the baggage claim area at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, killing five people and wounding eight others in the first Islamist attack on United States soil this year. The suspect, Estaban Santiago, was a member of the New Jersey National Guard, and had recently visited and FBI field office in Alaska in November 2016 claiming that he was being forced to watch ISIS videos and that his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency.
January 31, 2017: Denver Union Station Shooting Attack
According to reports, a former infantry Sergeant turned Islamist radicalopened fire just outside the Denver Union Station killing an RTD security officer before being apprehended by local law enforcement. The gunman, Joshua Cummings, had been brought to the attention of the FBI by local officials on more than one occasion prior to the attack and had been under surveillance. Furthermore, the mosque Cummings attended had even contacted the DHS to warn of his radicalism.
February 3, 2017: Louvre France Terrorist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacked a group of soldiers and guards outside the famous Louvre museum with a machete, shouting “Allahu Akbar”. The suspect was shot and then captured, while only minor injuries were sustained by one soldier. The suspect, an Egyptian resident of the United Arab Emirates, was issued a tourist visa in Dubai on November 8 and arrived in Paris on January 26.
February 19, 2017: France Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacked a woman with a knife and was before he was shot by police in Montauban France before he was able to attack a nearby group of civilians. Islamists linked to ISIS celebrated the attack via the encrypted chat application Telegram.
March 9, 2017: Germany Train Station Islamist Ax Attack
According to reports, a man armed with an ax at a train station in Dusseldorf Germany injured at least seven people before he was captured by police. The attacker, identified as Fatmir H., was an asylum seeker from Kosovo. While no Islamist motivation has been directly established, the bloody rampage marked the latest act of violence by an asylum seeker in Germany in recent years.
March 18, 2017: France Orly Airport Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, An Islamist took a French female soldiers rifle at Orly Airport and prepared to attack before two other nearby soldiers were able to shoot and kill the attacker. No injuries occurred as a result of the attack. Moreover the suspect, Ziyed Ben Belgacem, was known to French intelligence prior to the shooting incidents and had reportedly shot and injured a police officer in a suburb of Paris prior to the airport attack when the suspect was pulled over for driving too fast and managed to escape.
March 22, 2017: Westminster Bridge, Parliament Islamist Attacks
According to reports, one policeman and three civilians were killed in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster in London when an Islamist drove his vehicle into several people along Westminster Bridge. Around the same time, a knife-wielding attacker stabbed a police officer before the attacker was shot on the grounds outside Britain’s Parliament. Several days after the attack, a woman who fell into the Thames during the Westminster Bridge terror attack had died from her injuries.
March 23, 2017: Belgium Islamist Vehicle Attack
According to reports a French-Tunisian man drove his vehicle into a crowd of people along a busy shopping street, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way in the Belgian city of Antwerp. No injuries occurred as nearby local police were able to stop the vehicle in time. Weapons, including knives and at least one firearm, were found inside vehicle.
March 23 2017: Italy Islamist Vehicle, Knife Attacks
According to reports, an African citizen failed to stop at a police checkpoint in the Italian city Foggia, and ran over a police officer’s foot as he fled the scene before crashing into a parked lorry. The attacker then emerged from the immobilised car and launched a knife attack on officers, stabbing and wounding one in the hand.
April 7, 2017: Stockholm Sweden Islamist Vehicle Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacker drove a stolen beer truck into a crowd of people in a popular shopping district in Stockholm and then rammed it into a department store, killing four people and injuring 15 others. A nationwide manhunt ensued through much of the evening until police captured the suspect. The suspect was identified as a man from Uzbekistan who was previously known to the security services with the government of Uzbekistan sending explicit warnings prior to the attack. The suspect also posted support for ISIS on social media. Several days after the attack, Marie Kide, a Green Party politician in Trollhättan city council, had died from injuries sustained in the attack, becoming the fifth killed in the attack.
April 19, 2017: France Champs Élysées Islamist Shooting Attack
According to reports, one policeman was killed and two other were wounded in a shooting in central Paris at the Champs Élysées, when an Islamist gunmen attacked days before the first round of the 2017 French presidential election. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. Interestingly, the attacker had been under investigation by anti-terrorist officers for having shown an intention to kill police prior to the attack.
May 18, 2017: Milan Italy Train Station Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, two army officers and a police officer were stabbed at a train station in central Milan when he was stopped for a random security screening. The officers sustained minor injuries to the arm, collarbone, and neck before the suspect was apprehended. The suspect, Ismail Hosni, was a dual Tunisian-Italian citizen, and investigators were looking into any possible links to terrorist organizations as Hosni had posted several videos devoted to the Islamic State on social media.
May 22, 2017: Manchester Concert Islamist Bombing Attack
According to reports, an explosive device detonated outside an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena in England killed at least 22 people, including children. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack and had links to Al Qaeda and received training abroad and had returned from Libya just says before the attack. Interestingly, it was revealed that security services failed on at least five separate occasions to prevent the attack while his own friends and family reported him to the security services. Questions emerged about how Abedi was able to travel to Libya despite being known to intelligence services let alone conduct a bombing in a major Western city. Moreover, it was revealed that the MI5 waived travel bans to let Islamist rebels travel to join the fight against Colonel Gaddafi in Libya from 2011. A recent report published by MI5 revealed that the attack likely could have been prevented.
June 3, 2017: London Bridge Islamist Vehicle, Knife Attack
According to reports, seven people were killed and at least 48 others were injured when Islamists driving a vehicle struck pedestrians along the London Bridge and then attacked several people who knives at the nearby Borough Market. The Islamic State celebrated the attack on social media. Several days after the attacks, an 8th victim’s body was discovered in the Thames River. Interestingly, one of the attackers was previously known to intelligence services and had been questioned over his links to radical Islam within a year before the attack. One of the attackers was also featuredin a Channel 4 documentary last year in which he is seen among a group of radicals unveiling an Islamic State flag in a London park. Moreover, Italian intelligence notified British authorities that a third suspect involved in the attack had was a potential risk after he told Italian officials that he was going to become a terrorist.
June 3, 2017: Toronto Canada Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist woman walked into the Cedarbrae Mall in Toronto, Canada, screaming “Allahu Akbar”, as she attacked store employees with a large knife. The woman was apprehended by the civilians until police arrived at the scene without any serious injuries sustained. The suspect, Rehab Dughmosh, was reportedly wearing a bandana bearing the ISIS flag.
June 5, 2017: Melbourne Australia Islamist Hostage Crisis
According to reports, an Islamist gunman conducted a dramatic siege in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Brighton killing two civilians and injuring three police officers. The suspect reportedly called into Channel Seven’s newsroom during the standoff and claiming, “This is for IS. This is for al-Qaeda”. The suspect was eventually shot and killed by security forces. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. The suspect, a Somali-born Australian, was previously known to counter-terrorism police in Victoria and was recently released on parole just six months before the attack, prompting the nations Prime Minister to question intelligence services.
June 6, 2017: France Notre Dame Cathedral Knife Attack
According to reports, an Algerian man claiming to be an ISIS soldier shouted ‘this is for Syria’ as he attacked police officers outside Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral before he was shot and injured by police. Interestingly, the suspect had previously been awarded by the European Union for writing an article in which he complained about racism against migrants.
June 7, 2017: London Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, a woman walking from Wanstead station to Little Diamonds nursery in London was attacked by three Islamist woman shouting passages from the Koran and yelling about Allah. The woman suffered minor injuries from the attack and fled the scene before police arrived.
June 19, 2017 — France Champs Elysées Islamist Attack
According to reports, a heavily armed Islamist drove his vehicle into a police van outside the Champs-Elysées in Paris. The suspect died from injuries sustained from an explosion from inside the car as it hit the van. The explosive material apparently failed to properly blow up on contact. The attacker had been known to intelligence prior to the attack was was on a security watch list. The attacker had also pledged alleigence to the Islamic State.
June 20, 2017: Belgium Central Station Islamist Bombing
According to reports, an explosive device partially detonated inside Brussels Central Station in Belgium, failing to properly detonate. The attacker was shot dead by soldiers on patrol through the station. No injuries occurred as a result of the explosion. The suspect, Moroccan national Oussama Zariouh, was known to police prior to the attack and prosecutors said there were indications that he had sympathies for the Islamic State.
June 21, 2017: Michigan Airport Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, a Tunisian-Canadian man, Amor Ftouhi, attacked and injured a police officer with a knife inside a Michigan airport, while shouting Allahu Akbar and vowing vengeance for United States military operations in Iraq and Syria. The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
July 17, 2017: Spain Border Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist migrant crossing the Morocco-Spain border attacked police with a knife, while shouting Allahu Akbar. One officer was slashed by the attacker before police were able to apprehend him.
July 28, 2017: German Supermarket Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, a knife wielding man screaming “Allahu Akbar” conducted a wild attack inside a Hamburg supermarket that killed at least one person and left four others injured. German police arrested the attacker in the Barmbek district after witnesses followed the man and alerted authorities. Interestingly, the attacker was a radicalized Islamist known to German security agencies before the attack took place. Additionally, German intelligence attempted to recruit the suspect, a Palestinian identified as Ahmad A., as an informant prior to the attack.
August 6, 2017: France Eiffel Tower Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist man tried to force his way into the secure zone of the Eiffel Tower, and attacked nearby security forces while shouting, “Allahu Akbar.” The suspect was quickly overpowered and apprehended without any casualties as a result of the attack.
August 9, 2017: France Islamist Vehicle Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacker drove his vehicle into a group of soldiers who were on patrol in Paris, injuring six of the soldiers. Following an intensive manhunt, the suspect was captured alive. The suspect, identified as Hamou B., was an Algerian national who held legitimate papers to be in France.
August 17, 2017: Spain Islamist Terrorist Attacks
According to reports, sixteen people were killed and dozens were injured after Islamists drove a van into crowds in Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas area. Furthermore, investigators say a house explosion that morning was also linked the terrorist plot, resulting in the death of one person. Moreover, an additional attack was largely prevented by security forces in Cambrils. The Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attacks. Interestingly, the plot leader had ties to Spanish intelligence since 2014.
August 18, 2017: Finland Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, at least two people were killed and eight others were injured when an Islamist armed with a knife conducted an attack upon Central Market Square as well nearby Puutori Market Square in the Finish city Turku. The suspect, Morrocan national Abderrahman Mechkah, had been flagged months before the attack for extremist views when he was denied asylum.
August 25, 2017: Belgium Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacked a group of Belgian soldiers in the capital Brussels, while shouting “Allah Akbar”. The attacker, a Somalian national was shot and killed before any casualties occurred as a result of the attack. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
August 25, 2017: London Buckingham Palace Islamist Attack
According to reports, an Islamist man, identified as Mohiussunnath Choudhury, attacked three officers in London outside Buckingham Palace with a sword, while screaming “Allahu Akbar.” Two of the officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation but were able to subdue the suspect before any serious casualties occurred. The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
August 25, 2017: Stockholm Sweden Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, a Swedish police officer was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack at Bjorn’s Garden, a small park in Stockholm. The attacker was captured shortly after before causing additional casualties.
September 13, 2017: Toulouse France Islamist Attack
According to reports, an Islamist shouting “Allahu Akbar” attacked at least seven people in the French city of Toulouse leaving at least three people with minor injuries before he was subdued. The attacker was well known to authorities prior to the attack.
September 15, 2017: London Underground Islamist Bombing
According to reports, at least 29 people were injured when an explosive device went off inside the London Underground station sparking a massive manhunt for the suspect. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. Prior to the attacker’s arrest, US President Trump revealed that the attacker was “in the sights of Scotland Yard”. The case sparked a brief diplomatic row between the two countries. However, it was later revealed that the attacker, an Iraqi national, had been referred to an anti-extremist program before the attack took place. Moreover, the attacker had been arrested just weeks before in the exact location of the bombing, but was released by police.
September 15, 2017: France Metro Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist attacked a soldier at the central Chatelet metro station, shouting ‘Allah Akbar.” The soldier was able to subdue the suspect before any injuries occurred as a result of the attack.
September 15, 2017: France Islamist Hammer Attack
According to reports, two Islamist women attacked and injured two people in the French town of Chalon-sur-Saône with a hammer, while screaming “Allahu Akbar”. It is unclear if the suspects had been apprehended after their escape.
September 30, 2017: Edmonton Canada Islamist Attack
According to reports, an Islamist drove his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians before attacking an officer with a knife, leaving five people injured. The attacker carried an ISIS flag inside his vehicle during the rampage. The suspect, Somalian refugee Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, had been previously investigated for links to terrorism.
October 1, 2017: France Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist yelling ‘Allah Akbar’ attacked and killed two people with a knife before nearby soldiers were able to shoot and kill the suspect. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
October 6, 2017: Belgium Train Islamist Knife Attack
According to reports, an Islamist armed with a knife, shouting ‘Allah Akbar’, attempted to attack passenger aboard a train at the Brussels-South railway station. No injuries occurred as a result of the attack and the suspect was apprehended without incident.
October 31, 2017: New York Islamist Vehicle Attack
According to reports, an Islamist drove a truck down a crowded bike path along the Hudson River, killing eight people and injuring 11 others before being shot and apprehended by a police officer. The suspect had a note inside the truck which revealed his allegiance to the Islamic State.
November 10, 2017: France Islamist Vehicle Attack
According to reports, three people were injured when an Islamist drove a vehicle into a crowd of students near a high school in the French city of Toulouse. The suspect was captured by police.
Decemeber 11, 2017: New York Subway Islamist Bombing
According to reports, a Bangladeshi national detonated an explosive device strapped to his body in a crowded New York City commuter hub during the morning rush hour, however the explosive failed to detonate properly and injured just three people. The attacker, Akayed Ullah, criticized US President Donald Trump’s inability to protect the nation just hours before his attack on social media.
December 21, 2017: Australia Vehicle Attack
According to reports, an Afghan national drove an SUV into a group of pedestrians during rush hour in the city of Melbourne, injuring at least 19 people, in a deliberate act. Authorities quickly asserted that there was no link to terrorism. However, according to Police Commissioner Shane Patton, that attacker attributed his actions to “perceived mistreatment of Muslims” while repeatedly invoked “Allah”.
December 22, 2017: Pennsylvania Islamist Shootings
According to reports, an Islamist gunman, Ahmed Aminamin El-Mofty, targeted police officers in three separate shootings in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, injuring one officer before the suspect was killed. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as information about the suspects recent travel to the Middle East begins to surface. Additionally, it was revealed the immigration authorities had raided the suspects homewithin the last year.
